Birds of a feather
(St Arnaud track) 5-6 hrs return
level 2 Kiwi
What type of bird is that? Is it native to New Zealand? Do you have kiwi in the area? Join me on this intriguing insight into the birds around us as we hike our way up St Arnaud track through pristine native beech forest. Watch the vegetation change as we reach the bush line and enter an alpine wonderland. With spectacular views of the lake and village, you’ll find the climb was well worth the effort!
Join Tammy on this walk as she undertakes Department of Conservation (DOC) approved kiwi monitoring (recording their transmitter signals from a distance) providing useful information to the local DOC office on what the birds have been getting up to for the last fortnight. This is a rare opportunity to experience such work and it is only due to Tammy's previous experience and knowledge with kiwi and kaka that DOC has approved this special concession to her, so don't miss out! You will also learn more about New Zealand’s smaller native bird species by undertaking 5 minute bird surveys as we head to the top of the track. The frequent stops made looking and listening out for birds makes this a gentle and rewarding way to climb to the top of the mountain.
Who will it suit?
This walk will suit anyone from the first time bird watcher to the fully fledged ornithologist! It is highly recommended for those folk with an interest in learning about New Zealand’s bird species.
How fit do we need to be?
A moderate level of fitness is required to complete this walk. There are steep sections of track but the walk is broken up with frequent 5 minute stops to conduct bird surveys.
How long will it take?
Taking into account the frequent stops made as we head up the track, the walk should take approximately 5 hours returning via the same route that we entered.
